telling the story of jim jones
The 3-part limited docuseries 'JONES' tells the gripping tragedy of Jim Jones and his cult, the Peoples Temple. From the beginnings of a young, charismatic preacher in Indiana to the biggest mass-murder suicide in U.S. history. It’s a bewildering story of religion, money, drugs, blind obedience and death.
Exploiting African-Americans from the inner cities, Jim Jones offered salvation in exchange for the ultimate sacrifice: 912 people died in his utopian settlement "JONESTOWN" on November 18, 1978. Among the dead: Jim Jones, his congregation, most members of an NBC news crew and Californian congressman, Leo Ryan. 305 of the dead were children.
"He made his worshipers love him unconditionally, then ordered them all to die for him, which is brainwashing at its most extreme.” Philip Zimbardo, Jones researcher
The filmmaker has exclusive access to previously unseen documents and owns the story rights to one of the surviving members of the NBC news crew.
"First time we saw a bunch of people, showing up with their suitcases. They wanted to leave with us. That's the moment we knew we're in big trouble. He (Jones) lost control of the compound. ” Steve Sung, NBC Sound recordist and survivor
